Vorweg bemerkt:

Ich bin 63 Jahre alt und besitze ein etwa 6 Jahre altes Nokia "Nur-Handy". Viele Fachausdrücke wie "flashen" usw. kenne ich nicht.

Da ich nicht ewig in der Vergangenheit leben wollte, suchte ich nach einem smartphone. Ich gebe offen zu, dass ich schon etwas Angst hatte, so ein "Alleskönner" überhaupt installieren und bedienen zu können. Ich suchte in Internet-Foren und auch hier in diesem Forum und fand das Samsung Galaxy Ace. Wenn ich weder installieren, noch bedienen kann - so dachte ich - sind die Kosten verschmerzbar bzw. ab nach ebay. Doch weit gefehlt, es kam ganz anders,

nämlich:

- Installation einfach nur problemlos
- Bedienbarkeit einfach - halt alles ausprobieren hat den besten Lerneffekt
- App runterladen (barcoo) toll
- WLAN erlaubt schnelles und flüssiges surfen
- Berührungsbildschirm (Touchscreen?) einwandfrei

Das Galaxy Ace hatte ich mir ziemlich spontan gekauft, denn eigentlich war ich, nach diversen anderen Android-Handys, auf der Suche nach einem Ersatz für mein Desire HD. Das Ace spielt natürlich nicht in derselben Liga! Allerdings ist damit klar, an welchen Maßstäben ich es gemessen habe.

Das Fazit: das Galaxy Ace hat mich in mehrfacher Hinsicht positiv überrascht! Dazu gleich mehr. Hier zunächst die von mir festgestellten Hauptvor- und nachteile:

(+) gelungenes Design, einwandfreie Verarbeitung
(+) schnelle Arbeitsgeschwindigkeit
(+) TouchWiz-Oberfläche mit durchdachter Bedienung
(+) sehr gute Kamera
(+) lange Akkulaufzeit

(-) kleiner interner Speicher
(-) niedrige Videoauflösung und Framerate
(-) kein Headset

Design und Verarbeitung:

Ich schließe mich größtenteils den bisherigen 3 Bewertungen zu den negativen und vor allem den positiven Punkten an. Allerdings möchte ich einige der genannten Eigenschaften anders darlegen. Alle anderen der genannten Aspekte kann ich so bestätigen!

- der Akkudeckel ist, wie bei den meisten Handys, aus Plastik. Von besonders erwähnenswerter schlechter Verarbeitung ist hier, m. E., nicht die Rede. Eher im Gegenteil. Die Handyrückseite ist durch den leicht angerauten (schon fast genoppten) Deckel sehr griffig und somit liegt das Handy überraschend gut in der Hand. Bei manch anderen Handy hat man teilweise das Gefühl, dass es aus der Hand rutschen könnte (übertrieben dargestellt, aber deutlich-machend). Das Ace hat neben den von meinen Vorredner erwähnten auch diesbzgl. hervorrangende ergonomische Eigenschaften.

USE - As far as the reading experience, I really like the touch compared to the physical buttons on the previous generation. At first I was worried that I would constantly be turning the page from accidentally touching the screen, but this didn't become much of an issue. The screen is broken up into mapped sections, so if you touch the far left side that covers about 1" of the left of the screen, it goes to the previous page. General observations:

- Controlling/manipulating things on the screen is so much easier with the touch screen-it's a lot more intuitive!

- Athough I don't show it in the video, you can swipe instead of tap to turn pages. You may also use your left hand to page forward by tapping slightly more in from the left edge. It works quite well.

- Looking up a word is as easy as pressing on that word. No more fumbling with a 5-way controller. You can additionally highlight blocks of text quite easily by just swiping over it.

- Kindle Touch also has the new X-Ray feature which is really neat. It can be interesting to see a summary listing of facts from a given book about a person mentioned for instance. The Kindle Keyboard does not include this feature.

I've had my Touch for almost a day now, and it's pretty awesome. I'm not a big reviewer, but I figured several people may be in a similar position as I was yesterday, so here we go...

I'm definitely an avid reader. Actually, as I type this, I have roughly 1000 books sitting on a wall of shelves behind me. E-readers have always intrigued me, but I've never felt like they were worth $199 or more; however, when the Kindle Fire was announced, I thought they had released the Kindle for me.

I watched video reviews, "hands-on" videos, read numerous reviews, etc. I was pretty sure that I wanted a Fire, but as I thought about it, I wasn't convinced that the Fire really provided me with access to anything that I couldn't do on my phone (HTC Inspire 4g). Other than a bigger screen, the Fire was actually pretty limited (for my purposes). I have owned both Kindle 1 and Kindle 2, so I'm already committed to the basic idea: e-ink reading in a slim form factor with excellent connectivity to a large selection of books and subscriptions. I have come to rely on my Kindle experience, and it has seriously enhanced my reading.

The DX was not an obvious upgrade for me, but two features put me over the edge: the larger screen, and the native PDF reader. I now have the DX in my hands, and can report PROS, CONS, and NEUTRALS:

PROS:

-- the larger screen is a definite plus. I use the larger type size on my Kindle 2 (older eyes), and at this type size I get far more text per page on the DX. This makes the whole reading experience more book-like (and should be a boon to people who buy large-print books.)

-- the screen is also sharper and crisper than my Kindle 2 in a side-by-side comparison: the text is darker, and the contrast is much better, making for better visibility overall... Read more

This review was written back when the DX first came out and--as has been brought to my attention--needs to be updated a bit. I will indicate where things have changed for the better within the body of the review:

I owned the K1 and then the K2 and love them both, so I was really looking forward to the DX. My plan was to use the DX at home, and keep my K2 for carrying all over creation with me. It wasn't long, though, after my DX arrived the day before yesterday before disappointment set in.

Don't get me wrong, there is a LOT to like about the DX:

1) Pictures are awesome on it, if the publisher formats them properly.

2) Those who complain about darkness of text on their K2 (a problem I've never had, btw) will be thrilled by the DX's very dark text.

EDIT: LIKE THE KINDLE 3, THE DX NOW SPORTS A NEW E-INK DISPLAY THAT HAS MUCH BETTER CONTRAST, SO TEXT & PICTURES REALLY "POP."

First off, I am a first time kindle buyer, so this review will be more geared to those buyers thinking of entering into the kindle market, not a comparison of past editions.

My first impression of the Kindle DX was that it was actually very small compared to what I expected. The entire device is slightly smaller (in height and width) than a piece of paper, with the screen taking up approximately 85-90% of the front. This was actually a nice surprise, since I wanted something very portable, but good for magazines/research articles. After seeing the size of the DX, I think a K2 would have been way too small for what I want. At the same time, the device is very hefty. Picking it up, it becomes almost tiring to hold up in one hand for too long (another reason I think this one is better geared toward short articles instead of extended novel reading). It has a nice solid feel to it, but for some reason I was expecting it to be lighter.

The design of the Lenovo ThinkPadT400 has changed a bit since previous generation ThinkPads. The changes are subtle to the untrained eye, but they are there. The right side is now gently sloped similar to what can be found on the older T4x series, where the sides angle inward instead of dropping off flat. The first clue about this is the optical drive bezel which sports a nice beveled edge. The rubber feet have also been slightly tweaked, now feeling softer, and you get an additional springy nub on the bottom of the notebook. Getting past the minor case design changes, the style of this ThinkPad is every bit as boring as all ThinkPads preceding it. We have the same paint, same rubbery texture, and we still have our ThinkPad logo.

Upgrade and expansion is a step harder than most notebooks, but still very simple. To gain access to all user-replaceable parts, you simply remove five screws and carefully remove the palmrest and keyboard. Here you gain access to an open WWAN slot, another for Turbo Memory or UWB, two DDR3 memory slots, and your wireless card. At this stage you can also see the processor and heatsink, but a few additional items must be removed before you can lift those items out. Although this setup does seem like Lenovo is trying discourage the user from upgrading parts, Lenovo fully allows owners to handle upgrading or adding components to their notebook without voiding the warranty. That said, advanced component replacement, such as removing the processor, might void a warranty. The hard drive is the only item accessible from the outside of the case (besides the battery) and is easily removed with a single screw.

Build quality is very similar to the previous generation ThinkPad T61, with all of its strengths and weaknesses. Fit and finish are great with most parts, but you still have a good amount of battery wiggle in the back, as well as the cheaper feeling plastic LCD lid. This configuration offered both PC Card and ExpressCard/54 slots, so it included the spring loaded dust flap. The 7200rpm drive kept processes moving along smoothly with its faster transfer speeds and shorter seek times. Unlike models with the ATI 3470 Hybrid graphics, this T400 was not destined to game. It is capable of playing older games with tweaking, or newer games if they are not 3D intensive. While a ThinkPad might not be the first choice for a multimedia notebook, the T400 easily handles the load of 720 or 1080P HD movies. Video output is limited to VGA from the T400, or DVI through the advanced docking stations.

The high brightness display option on the updated T400 looks excellent and doesn’t take a huge bite out of your battery under normal activities. With most high brightness screens the power consumption is high even at lower brightness settings and what we found with the T400 is the impact on the battery is minimal at worst. On the 6-cell battery we managed 5 hours and 58 minutes of battery life, right on the mark with the previous T400 that used hybrid graphics. The updated keyboard support is my favorite change, knowing that Lenovo listened to feedback from users and improved the design. Overall, if you are in the market for a business notebook that is usable in direct sunlight, the T400 with the high nit screen option is the way to go.
